Netflix viewers have just days to binge ‘severely underrated’ British comedy
Netflix viewers have less than a week to binge all five seasons of a ‘truly hilarious’ British comedy series before it’s taken down.
Originally airing on BBC between 2012 and 2019, Cuckoo was set in Lichfield, Staffordshire and followed the Thompson family.
However, dad Ken (Greg Davies) and Lorna (Helen Baxendale) were thrown a curveball discovering their daughter Rachel (Tamla Kari) returned from her gap year before attending medical school married.
While travelling, she met and got hitched to Dale ‘Cuckoo’ Ashbrick (Andy Samberg), an eccentric American hippie who was unemployed and preferred to spend his time taking drugs.
‘The season sports laugh out loud moments consistently and is thoroughly lovable,’ one fan posted on review site Rotten Tomatoes after tuning into the first season.
‘Cuckoo season one was actually elite. Greg Davies masterclass,’ Chris posted on X.
‘Is there a better TV pairing than Greg Davies and Taylor Lautner? No, no there is not. Cuckoo deserves more recognition,’ Vicky added.
Others said it was ‘severely underrated’ and one of their ‘all-time favourite comedies’.
However, for those yet to tune in, there’s just a few days to do so before Netflix removes the show from its library on January 4.
During its run Cuckoo also featured Taylor Lautner, Andie MacDowell and Outnumbered’s Tyger Drew-Honey.
When it launched, the series became BBC Three’s most-watched comedy launch, beating the record set by Bad Education, which had premiered the previous month.
Davies was also nominated for a Bafta for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme for the first season.
Despite its popularity a second season very nearly didn’t happen due to Samberg’s busy schedule, with the actor dropping out and instead being replaced by Lautner, who played his character’s long-lost lovechild Dale.
The subsequent four seasons aired between 2014 and 2018.
Although the pilot of an American version of the show starring Michael Chiklis, Cheryl Hines, and Flula Borg was developed in 2015, it was never picked up for a full season.
Cuckoo is streaming on Netflix until January 4.
