States Told to Implement Two Landmark Building Codes for Energy Savings

Vijayawada: Aiming to build a sustainable and energy-secure future, the Union Government has set an ambitious target for states to help reduce the nation’s energy consumption by 89 million tonnes of oil equivalent by 2030.
Secretary to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Milind Deore, here on Sunday underscored the need for proactive states like Andhra Pradesh to lead by example.
As part of this national mission, he said, the government is placing significant emphasis on sustainable cooling, recognising it as a critical lever for addressing the rapidly growing demand for cooling solutions.
To ensure that this demand is met sustainably, the BEE has introduced two landmark building codes, under which the first is the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC) for commercial buildings and the second, the Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) for residential buildings.
Under this initiative, major energy-consuming appliances are rated from 1-star (least efficient) to 5-star (most efficient) under this programme. The star ratings empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions, thereby driving down electricity.
c Proactive states like Andhra Pradesh and urban local bodies are urged to adopt and rigorously implement these codes to realise maximum energy savings.”
